Differences Between ComposiMold Flex and ComposiMold Original for Picky Pads

Here we discuss the differences between ComposiMold Flex and ComposiMold Original for Picky Pads. We show you how to make reusable picky pads using ComposiMold, and compare two different versions, ComposiMold Original and ComposiMold Flex, so you can decide which one works best for you.

This comparison uses two versions of the material. ComposiMold Original creates a firmer picky pad. When pulling out the beads, there is more resistance, which can feel more satisfying for some users. ComposiMold Flex is softer and more flexible. It stretches as you pull, making it easier to remove the beads. Some people prefer this softer feel, while others may find it a bit too easy. Both versions work well, and the choice depends on personal preference.

So we’re going to start by making a Picky Pad with the ComposiMold Original. If you get the ComposiMold Used, which is basically the ComposiMold Original, it comes as cubes. Place Cubes in a microwave safe container and melt in the microwave or double boiler or use any heat source carefully. You don’t have to melt it all, just what you need for the Picky  Pad. So I melted this for 2 minutes. Don’t overheat or boil the ComposiMold as that will turn in darker over time. And let it cool a bit after you heat it so it isn’t too hot to handle.

Then, pour the melted ComposiMold over the beads, making sure they are fully covered. Pour slowly to minimize air bubbles, and gently tap the mold if needed to release any trapped air. I want to give the ComposiMold time to go in between the beads, and flow into any crevices.

This process works the same for the ComposiMold Flex to make the fidget toys.

As I’m showing the ComposiMold Flex being used to make a Picky Pad, let me talk about  ComposiMold, it’s a reusable molding material that melts when heated and solidifies again as it cools. That makes it especially useful for projects like picky pads. Advantages of ComposiMold are

  1. It’s reuable
  2. It’s transparent and easy to make any color you want
  3. It last a very long time with some people remelting it hundreds of times
  4. It’s ecofriendly.

You can add scents, colors or other things to the ComposiMold. Scents can be anything from a little vanilla flavoring to peppermint or lavender. It’s up to you. Colors can be food coloring, water based colorants, or pigments.

Here’s an added video! Let’s make a starfish shaped Picky Pad. I saw this in my daughters toys from years past and thought it would make an excellent example of a unique shape. So I poured in the beads followed by the ComposiMold Flex.  Let’s see what we get. And that’s the best thing about ComposiMold, you can experiment.

Allow the material to cool completely. As it cools, it will firm up and become ready to use.

For a more creative option, you can also use fun shapes instead of a standard tray. In this example, a simple starfish-shaped mold was made using a beach toy. This shows how easy it is to create unique picky pad designs using everyday items.

Once fully cooled, remove the picky pad from the mold. Silicone molds make this step easy by allowing you to peel the material away cleanly.

The Original version is firmer and requires more effort to remove the beads, which can provide a more satisfying tactile experience. The Flex version is softer and stretchier, allowing beads to be removed more easily and with less force.

Both ComposiMold Original and ComposiMold Flex are excellent choices for making reusable picky pads. If you prefer more resistance and structure, Original may be the better option. If you prefer a softer, more flexible feel, Flex may be the better fit. You can also combine the two to make something in between. Since both can be remelted and reused, you can always experiment and find the option that works best for you.

Picky pads are great for stress relief, fidgeting, or just keeping your hands busy. The idea is simple—you embed beads or small objects into the material and then pick them out. The repetitive motion can be very satisfying and calming. ComposiMold works well for this because it holds the beads securely while still allowing you to remove them with your fingers. And it is reusable so you can make and remake your Picky Pads as many times as you want.

One important thing to keep in mind is that ComposiMold will soften if it gets too hot. You should avoid leaving finished picky pads in direct sunlight or in a hot car, as they can lose their shape or partially melt.
